The Ancient Ram (Wotton Under Edge, Glos)

This Inn was the recent focus of Lunaorbis' first investigation into the paranormal. This former pub built in 1145 was built on the site of an old pagan burial ground and the crossing of several ley lines. It began life as a church house which housed stone masons, slaves and children who were building the nearby St Marys church.

In 1350 the building was bought by the De Bathe family and stayed with them for 171 years, it then changed hands frequently, becoming an inn in 1820. In 1968 the current owner John Humphries bought it and has lived alongside the many hauntings since then. We met John who gave us a tour of The Ram and introduced us to its history of devil worship, deaths and exorcisms.

On arrival the outside looks slightly sad but as soon as you step over the threshold it hits you. The team experienced a dramatic drop in temperature and a tingling sensation all over our bodies. The energy was 'buzzing' creating a slight light headedness. There was a definate brooding atmosphere to the place, what some might call an unhappy, unloved feeling.

The downstairs lounge/ bar area was the first room for investigation. There have been many sightings of apparitions and light anomalies seen here. We however were not so lucky. Our clairvoyant said he sensed quite afew children running around here but we were unable to contact anyone on the spirit board, even though the boar was 'humming' with energy.
Moving into the barn area where there has previously been alot of violent activity. For us this was the scene of a possible light anomaly in the floor. (See our members section for the photo of this). We spent a considerable amount of time in here but unfortunately nothing else happened. After this we decided to head upstairs towards the infamous Bishops room. On the way we encountered a light anomaly in the hallway area. (See members section for a photo).

Tradition said that we had to knock on the door of the Bishops room and ask for permission to go in. This is apparently the most haunted room of the house so we were prepared to be spooked. I reached out for the door handle and just as i was about to touch it 'BANG!' the door slammed hard against the frame as if someone was leaning on the other side trying to stop us from entering. Finally we gained entry and got hit by a menacing cold atmosphere.

Whilst sitting in this room trying to make contact with someone or something our clairvoyant saw a red flash of light go across the doorway. This was followed later by the appearance of a shadowy figure in the same area. On exiting the room I walked out last and backwards as it almost felt like you shouldn't turn your back on 'them' just in case.

We headed towards The Den, a small room off the hallway. Our clairvoyant shut himself in there and waited to make contact. He couldn't sense much but on the way out we may have just managed to catch the start of a manifestation on camera. (See members page for the photo).

Finally The Witches room at the other end of the building was our last stop, it felt unusually calm and still in here. I chilled out on the bed and sat there for awhile but sensed and saw nothing. Maybe the spirits din't want to talk to us or show themselves here. Unfortunately we couldn't get up into the attic as the stairs were apparently unsafe, maybe we might have seen the highwaymen reputed to be up there, who knows.

All in all our investigation neither conclusively proved nor disproved the existence of ghosts and spirits. However we did experience many strange occurrences during our visit but not enough to scare ourselves silly (this time).

To conclude The Ancient Ram Inn with all its rich tapestry of murders, devil worship and untimely deaths definately holds something special and will be revisited by the Lunaorbis team again in the future.
